The starboard (right) side of the ship, just behind the bow, was gashed open when the iceberg smashed in the hull plates, which were held by steel rivets. The freezing temperature of the water may have contributed by making the rivets and plates more brittle and easily displaced. Once the water began to overtop the dividers between hull sections, the entire bow filled with water and caused the ship to go under. As the stern was lifted from the water, it split off from the bow, and the ship separated into two pieces as it sank to the bottom.
