Most people tend to remain near where their ancestors lived. Since a very large number of African Americans descend from Africans imported to the South to work as slaves, there are still large numbers of African Americans in the South.
African Americans
The Great Migration was a time when African Americans moved west for various reasons trough the 1915-1930. When the Emancipation Proclamation was signed in 1863, less than 8 percent of the African American population lived in the Northeast or Midwest. By 1900, about 90 percent of all African-Americans still resided in states with slaves. There wasn't very much food while they were trying to get to the North. One reason they left was because of floods and the bug called the boll weevil that destroyed many crops. The boll weevil was a highly destructive insect that entered the United States from Mexico. It lived in the southern economy in the period between 1910 and 1920 by inflicting large amounts of damage on the region's cotton crops forcing people to move.
In the 1700's most African Americans were slaves. Those that were in northern colonies were free, but did have discrimination. In Florida in St. Augustine slaves could escape there and find compete freedom. They could own land, have businesses, and go to school.
Canadians are living in America legally, they live in North America. Did you mean United States of America ? Mexicans, Canadians and USA people are Americans, north Americans. Or do you think that United States of America has bought North America ?People who lived in USA must be called United States Americans, not only "Americans" or "America", because Americans are people living in North, Central, and South America. Your question should be : Do canadians ever come to the United States illegaly ? or : Do United States Americans go to Canada ilegally ?
African-Americans who lived in the North between 1865 and 1900 generally faced wretched living conditions.

A massive number of African Americans migrated from the south to the north after World War I. The south had long been the location with the largest number of African Americans lived. The issue of race came front and center after World War I. After returning from the war, black soldiers saw no change or opportunity existed for them in the south, and many took part in the Great Migration, which at its end had 80 percent of blacks living in cities.

By the end of the Great migration in the 1960's, African-Americans had become an urbanized population. More than 80 percent lived in cities. It was one of the largest and most rapid migrations in history.
