Simple. Man. As with almost all the deforestation taking place around the globe, man is the single-most destructive force on the planet. For example, England was once heavily forested. But after the past 2,000 years of constant occupation by humans, there are almost no forests left on the island (and haven't been for a couple hundred years). The disappearance of the rain forest in Brazil is another example of deforestation and it is taking place at an alarming rate. Also the result of humans. The island of Madagascar is experiencing similar clear-cutting of its rain forest, and soon will be gone altogether along with the native plants and animal species that can be found nowhere else in the world.
