The 20 and 60 GB model and the early 80 GB models.They all have 4 USB ports and a Flash card reader. It is called backward compatibility because a console with reverse comparability would let a PS2 play PS3 games or a PSP play PS Vita games and it does not exist for any Sony Playstation Devices

Sure you can replace the 120 GB harddrive with a PS3 80 GB harddrive if you also add the software for the 120 GB model. You can trade your PS3 toward a 60 GB PS3 model if you want, but you would be smarter to keep both models and only use the old PS3 to play PS2 games. There is no reason to want an 80 GB PS3 as the 60 GB model does not have the less capable partially software based emulation backward compatibility used in the 4 USB port 80 GB models and instead has the emotion engine to provide the best available backward compatibility used only in the first 20 and 60 GB PS3 for the USA and Japan.

There is not "part". It's a software sort of thing, not hardware. I recently have gotten the Yellow Light of Death, and after all of this trouble, I can say that although the slim does NOT have backwards compatibility, it has better hardware and will not crash as quickly. If you do not own a ps3 then get the slim. If you want backwards compatibility that badly, just buy a Ps2. They're only like 60 USD these days.
