What qualities of igneous rocks have long made them useful for tools and building?

Extrusive igneous rock: Obsidian. Quality of conchoidal fracture making them easily workable to a sharp edge for cutting tools or weapon points. Intrusive igneous rock: Granite. Quality of durability due to high crystalline quartz and feldspar mineral mix. Also beauty. Harder to work, but a great, long lasting building stone.

What qualities of igneous rock have made them useful for tools?

Igneous rock is among the hardest type of rock on the earth. Unlike sedimentary rocks such as sandstone, which is formed from sand and gravel forced together under pressure, igneous rock is formed from pure molten rock - rendering it very hard. Consider this analogy. Say you took a bunch iron chips and forced them together under high pressure into a hammer. Then you make another hammer out of pure molten iron. Which would be the most effective and which would last longer? The one made out of cast iron is the obvious choice because the iron molecules have had the opportunity to bind together instead of just "stick" together. The same is true for igneous rock, making it great for making better tools with longer lifespans.
