RMS Titanic had a designed cruising speed of 21 knots (about 39 kph, 24 mph), and a maximum speed of 23 knots.

Its speed at the time of collision with the iceberg has been variously reported as 20.5 or 22.5 knots. The lower speed is far more likely given the limitations of its engines.

The Titanic was travelling close to its top speed. It was speeding at 21 knots through the North Atlantic even though the crew had been warned by other ships of the sightings of icebergs. We don't exactly know why Captain Smith was driving so fast, some think it is because Bruce Ismay (who was in charge of White Star Line - the owners of the Titanic) put pressure on the Captain to make the ship go as fast as it could as he wanted to prove that the White Star Line was the best shipping company, while others think that the Captain was driving fast because after the Titanic's voyage he was to retire so he basically wanted to get it over with.
