The Phantoscope, a prototype of the motion picture projector was invented by Charles Francis Jenkins, while working for the U.S. Government in Washington D.C.. He displayed the first "movie" before an audience, using reeled film and electric light, in 1894 in Richmond, Indiana, near his boyhood home. Jenkins twice patented the machine before selling it. The patent documents show his residence as Richmond, Indiana.
