In Kannada RAYA means a senior man, i think the word raya became rao. ex: Bheema rayaru, Rama rayaru etc. The famous kannada poet K.S.Narasihma swamy in his poem "Rayaru bandaru mavana manege ratriyagittu.." describing rayaru. I think same meaning for 'Roy' in Bengali also. A.N.P.Rao
