This radiation has been detected as the cosmic microwave background, or CMB. About that time the universe would have rung like a bell as sound energy would have propagated through it.
We have detected sound waves bleeding energy off stars within sufficiently dense nebular, so we know this phenomenon is real, and interesting.

If you are referring to the Big Bang, I am afraid that there is not really an answer for you. Cosmology (the study of the universe and its origin) is such a recently developed science that there is yet not way to explain why the Big Bang occurred in any terms more than conjecture. It is thought to have been caused either by a collision or rubbing together of other universes, or a presence of enough room in the 'multiverse' for another universe to form. If you really want to pursue an answer to this question, the best answer I can give you is this: become a cosmologist.

The big bang theory does not state that "the universe began with a gigantic explosion." The theory suggests that our universe originated from an infinitesimally small point called a singularity. Since all of space was all localized within this point, the rapid expansion of the universe isn't an explosion. An explosion occurs within space, but the expansion of space itself isn't an explosion. Quite simply, there isn't anything outside of space for the universe to explode into. Thus the "big bang" wasn't big, nor did it go bang. Around the time of the big bang (about 13.7 billion years ago), the universe was much hotter and expanding very rapidly (somewhat analogous to an explosion but by no means an actual explosion).
