For vertical objects, shadows are shortest when the Sun (or other light source) is directly overhead. This is when taller objects have their shadows under or near them.

For horizontal objects, the shadow is shortest when its longest cross section is parallel to the beam from the light source.

During winter the shadows are shorter because of the tilt of the axis on the earth and sun. (x) this is the axis and it is tilted 27 degrees east so it is in the opposite motion of the sun because of this it makes the shadows shorter however this same process is repeated indulgently oppositely so it has the opposite effect in summer= longer shadows.

In winter. This is when there is the greatest angle of sunlight, because the Sun is overhead on the other side of the equator (where it is summer). So for any given time of the day, winter shadows are longer than spring, summer, or fall shadows.

Do shadows get longer until it reaches its longest point and then it will start getting shorter?

Shadows get shorter as the sun get higher up in the sky and as the sun goes down shadows will get longer so shadows get shorter in the morning and get longer in the afternoon. Also, as the year progresses, the sun's angle in the sky at the same point in each day changes, due to the 23.5 degree tilt of the Earth's axis. In the northern hemisphere, for instance, shadows get longer and longer (again, at the same time of day) until the winter solstice around December 21st, then they start getting shorter and shorter.

What day of the year are shadows the shortest?

The day when your shadow is the shortest depends on where you are on the Earth. * In the northern hemisphere it is when the sun is the highest in the sky. The day of the Summer Solstice * .In the southern hemisphere it is when the sun is the highest in the sky. The day of the Winter Solstice. * At the equator the sun is directly overhead and your shadow is at its minimum at each of the equinoxes
