The movie takes place in 1881, the month of July to be exact. You will notice in the scene on the train with Richard Harris, (English Bob), that they are discussing the headlines in the morning paper about the condition of President Garfield, after an assassination shooting which took place in June of 1881. Later in the scene when Harris arrives at the town of "Big Whiskey", we learn from Gene Hackman, (Little Bill), that it's Independence Day, July 4th, when he beats Harris down for bringing up the Queen" among other things from the past, and for coming into town armed and refusing to hand over their weapons to one of Hackman's deputies.
