The wealthier families during the 19th century had elaborate trains made out of wood and metal and the dolls would be usually from France and made out of porcelain with silk dresses and laces. Other toys that were elaborate were rocking horses, prams for dolls, etc. The middle class families gave their children toys made from wood; painted; the dolls were often made from straw and some with straw or cotton filled bodies with porcelain heads. Many children had elaborate to older sleds; played 'kick the can;' tag; sometimes went swimming (swung off a rope attached to a tree) and fishing.

The toys were made of wood in the old days as at that time no the people dint discovered and knew how to give shape the the material like plastic, iron etc they only discovered the wood and knew how to give shape to it.
There are poor little children everywhere that have NO toys. Think about it. How sad would a little three or four year old kid be without even a stuffed animal, forget cars, trains, dolls, barbies, etc. and no technology at all! How sad! So Toys for Tots is important because people that are better off and more fortunate give what excess toys they have to those who have none! :)
