Barry Pepper
I presume you mean the American sniper, Private Daniel Jackson. In addition to making certain his rifle is ready to make an accurate shot, he quotes Psalms. Sometimes he also kisses a crucifix.
He is shot to death by a German sniper.
If you are referring to the German sniper (shot by Pvt. Daniel Jackson [Barry Pepper]) who shoots Pvt. Adrian Caparzo (Vin Diesel) in the courtyard overlooked by the bombed out apartment with the French family, it is likely (if authentic) a Karabiner Kar 98K fitted with a scope. This is a guess however, as (if memory serves) it is a manual load, bolt action rifle, so could not have been a Walther Gewehr 43 which is a semi-automatic weapon.
The fact that he got shot! Otherwise the beach landing scene at the start and the sniper scene later are the two that stand out for me.

I think he uses a 30. caliber MG that he shares with private Mellish, based on the book In "Saving Private Ryan" - Pvt Adrian Caparzo (played by actor Van Disel) was a member of the infantry rifle squad and his weapon was the M-1 Garand both during the landings on the beach and in scenes later when he was killed by a sniper. I'm pretty sure that was Pvt. Daniel Jackson, the sniper, played by Barry Pepper.
