Kakapo are no longer believed to live on Stewart Island since feral cats wiped out the population there. Because of predation by cats, dogs, stoats and rats on the mainland, all remaining kakapo have been moved to offshore islands.
It is possible that there are still some remaining kakapo on far-flung sections of the island. If this is the case, they will only be found in the dense rainforest and scrubland on the island.
