Kakapo are no longer believed to live on Stewart Island since feral cats wiped out the population there. Because of predation by cats, dogs, stoats and rats on the mainland, all remaining kakapo have been moved to offshore islands.

It is possible that there are still some remaining kakapo on far-flung sections of the island. If this is the case, they will only be found in the dense rainforest and scrubland on the island.

What is the area location of the native kakapo?

Kakapo are endemic to New Zealand. Although on e widespread throughout the mainland, they are now only found on islands off the southern coast. They were moved there for their own protection because of predation by cats, dogs, stoats and kiore (Polynesian rats). In 2014, they are now found only on Anchor Island, Codfish Island (Whenua Hou) and Little Barrier Island (Hauturu). These islands are essentially made up of thick bushland which is closest to the kakapo native habitat.

Is keeping kakapo in a cage good or bad?

Keeping kakapo in a cage is bad. Kakapo have a slow breeding cycle, breeding only once every two to three years. They often become stressed in captivity. The best place for kakapo is some of New Zealand's southern islands, where they can be protected from predators, but allowed to go about their lives in an area that closely resembles their natural habitat.
