In the "Masquerade" scene, there is a pan up the stairs. When it reaches the top of the stairs, Opera patrons dressed in cat masks strike the pose that the cats on the show "Cats" pose in any promotional material. "Cats" is also an Andrew Lloyd Webber show.

Andrew Lloyd Webber's Phantom of the Opera-used a variety of styles from classic opera when Christine sings Think of Me, to 1980s' rock style in the song the Phantom of the Opera, the Music of the Night is a Ballad.
Webber's Le Fantom
Le Fantome de l'opera, the tale of a criminally insane recluse obsessed with a young opera singer, was originally written and distributed to the public by Gaston Leroux in 1910
Among many different adaptations of the story, Andrew Lloyd Webber's version stands out as a figurehead of both theatrical excellence and cinematic magic. Webber, along with his cohorts Charles Hart and Richard Stilgoe, transformed Leroux's novel into a trendy yet majestic musical in 1986 and later a movie.
Overall, the writers and composers involved with the creation of the Broadway musical and following movie maintained an operatic style of music which reflected the origins of the story as well as the action. But, in true Webber style, modern musical composition brought this age old story into the twentieth century and made it accessible to even the youngest of viewers.
Webber has been known to interject musical scores with rock, pop, country, and other eclectic styles. His involvement with the musical composition in thePhantom of the Opera is most evident in the scores sung by the Phantom himself. In deeply resonating melodies, the sometimes dissonant sounding chords illustrate the Phantom as an extraordinary musical genius who if far beyond the times in which he lives in. Simultaneously, portions of the Phantom's music are as soft as a lullaby while others are driven with a frantic anger illustrating his unfathomable love and heightening rage. The varied tempos, while giving the audience chills, pull them deeper into a compassionate rapport with the unwanted soul.
In contrast to the Phantom's musical style, the characters of Christine Daae, her love interest, and best friend took advantage of traditional opera styles. The lyrics, provided by Charles Hart, let these personalities express themselves in a way that exemplified their optimism and innocence. Each character's qualities are easier to define by their well-constructed musical components.
This is also true for the other players within the story. Many of the supporting characters utilize a classical operetta, or light opera style which involves the intermixture of monologues and dialog inside the composition. This helps to break the audience from profoundly dark feeling of the story and interjects a small amount of humor into the show's development.

There are two movies. One was made without words, and was made before Andrew Lloyd Webber turned 'The Phantom of the Opera' into a musical. The second is a new movie. It has the songs and dialogue and better effects. Although some say that the newer one has gore.
To make certain his opera box is free for the Phantom to watch their stage play and to see, to hear Christine sings.
Jennifer ellison
Personally I think Gerard Butler did a pretty good job in the 2004 movie, however on stage Michael Crawford was brilliant in the original cast of Phantom, But also Ramin Karimloo who currently is playing Phantom in Andrew Lloyd Webbers sequel Love Never Dies, played Phantom in the West End's production of Phantom of the Opera and cameo'd Christine's father in the 2004 movie Phantom of the Opera. He gives an breathtaking performance of Phantom in both Phantom and Love Never Dies and has a truly amazing voice.
A musical as well as a drama.
