Gabriel Dumont's wife was Madeleine Wilkie, the daughter of Jean Baptiste Wilkie, an Anglo-Métis/Countryborn chief. Gabriel Dumont and Madeleine Wilkie married in 1858.

During the 1885 Métis uprising, of which Gabriel was a leader, Madeleine nursed the wounded. She died from consumption and injuries from a fall from a buggy in Lewistown, Montana in October 1885.
