Without John Hancock & his money, we would not be the USA. John was among the wealtiest, if not the wealthiest man in America pre- Revolutionary War. He & his peers basically financed the war, at an all or nothing risk to themselves. John Hancock was also, quite literally, the very first father of our country because he was the first President of the Continental Congress. There is a wonderful book available at the Smithsonian that details it all & supplies references. It has copies of the letters that Hancock sent to Washington during the war and also the minutes of Congress in which Hancock was urging them to even hire Washington. Basically, John Hancock put it all on the line & worked relentlessly to make things turn out okay. It's a shame that previous so called scholars have been so lazy.
