Pennywise (the dancing clown) was a character in Stephen King's IT -a book, later a film. He first appears in 1740, removing 300 people from a Derry township. It was destroyed in 1985 (apparently) by the second Ritual of Chud.
The book implies that just as there was a creator of things, and the Turtle, so there was also a destroyer of things, as there is always a balance. This is what Pennywise is.

∙ 14y agoPennywise the evil clown is conceived by Stephen King to be a were-spider, that is, a creature that can assume the form of either a giant spider or a person (much as a were-wolf can be either a wolf or a person). In the Dark Tower series, Pennywise is identified as the Crimson King, who is the ultimate evil in all the universes.

According to the book, Pennywise's true form was far too horrible and beyond the comprehension of the human mind. To the kids in the Losers' Club, a giant spider was the closest thing that their minds were able to interpret. This presents quite a challenge when trying to adapt the book to film.
