The original Poltergeist movie was about a family that lived in a new home that was situated on top of burial grounds. Prior to building contruction, the land developer only relocated the headstones from the grounds (but left the actual bodies).
The plot sees the family that moves into the new home, tortured by souls of those still buried beneath its foundation. During the course of the movie, the youngest child begins to converse/interact with these 'lost souls'. And of course, to make the movie even more interesting, a Demon is introduced.
Carol-Anne (the youngest child) is drawn into the heart of the home by the wayward lost souls as they are attracted to her 'life force'. The Demon dwelling amongst them, keeps the child at bay which poses difficulty for the family trying to get her back into the earthly dimension.
Psychic investigators become involved, and eventually a medium is able to help the family get Carol-Anne back. However, that is not the end of the problems. As the family prepares to move to another home elsewhere, the demon returns. This time it attempts to take both Carol-Anne and her brother Robbie.
As not to ruin the ending, should you decide to watch the movie, I'll end my depiction of Poltergeist here.
