well back in 1793 names were just something to go by. nobody really had middle names. back then names were pretty much your titles and they didnt really take the time to make those titles long. so Samuel Houston had no middle name.

In 1973 middle names didn't really get shown. Middle names didn't matter. Your first and last name matter.
