Life on the prairie in 19th century America was a hardship. Their diet consisted of what they could grow, catch and/or shoot. A vegetable garden was a must. They had to grow enough for immediate consumption and store in the cellar for those long winter months. They hunted deer, elk or like herbaviors. Leftover meat was salted and stored in the cellar. They also ate squirrel, rabbit and other small game. They raised chickens, ducks turkeys for the eggs and meat. The family cow gave milk which also supplied them in butter. Some things were traded with neighbors or the general store for things they didn't grow or make themselves.
