Being a farmer back in the 1800's was very difficult. Farmers had to plow and take care of the animals in the hot sun. Working all day and using all their time and energy just to be a farmer .

In the late 1880's and early 1900's, a typical farm would be an average of 100 acres. Farms were very different because back then, farmers used horses for everything; now we use tractors for the farm work.

Farmers raised cows, pigs, chickens, and horses. They grew turnips, potatoes, carrots, grain, wheat, and corn. The buildings on a farm included a barn where horses were stored at one end and cows at the other. The milk shed was where they would separate the cream from the milk. The wagonshed was where farmers would store wagons, and the hen house was where the hens would live.

It was very difficult, since growing seasons only lasted up to 90 days. They found one type of wheat called "Marquis" that could survive the tough winds, and harvested fast enough for the short growing season.
