Quote form Peter Benchley's (author of Jaws) book Shark Life- "There was a problem with the title: We didn't have one. Half an hour before the book was to go into production, there still was no title. Tom and I reviewed some of the hundred plus titles we had tried. I had come up with titles like- A stillness in the water-The scilence of death- There were monster titles: Leviathan- Levathan Rising, The Jaws Of Leviathan. It was always just "JAWS".

The original book went through some name changes though; as Peter Benchley recounts in the book "Shark Trouble"' up to half an hour before the book was to go into production they were still coming up with names. The ones Benchley mentions are: A Stillness In The Water, The Silence Of Death, Leviathan, Leviathan Rising, The Jaws Of The Leviathan, White Death, The Jaws Of The White Death, and Summer Of The Shark .

They Finally settled on JAWS, it became a big hit, and there was never a thought of retitling the movie.

But the crew did call the shark "Bruce".
