Is it all right to give a painting a few layers of student quality oil paint and then paint artist quality oil paint over the top or is it better if I just use artist quality materials throughout?

Student quality oil paints tend to be less colour-fast, and of a lesser quality hence less durability. For lasting results and the best possible finish it is best to use artist quality paints throughout. The world is already losing major works of art to the ravages of time, and the deterioration of the surfaces and materials. It would be a shame it your painting turned out to be a major work in the future and was lost to mankind by lack of forethought on the artist's part.

Has anyone ever heard of an artist by the name of John Higar I have a painting by this artist and the title of the painting is Little Cheetah Any help would be appreciated Thanks?

John Higar, later known as Billyjohn Rainbow, was an artist during the 1970's in Indianapolis, Indiana. He often painted as the pre-show entertainment at the Black Curtain Dinner Theater. His painting style was unique--often using his hands or some strange tool. I never saw him paint a picture right side up. As he painted, it would be almost impossible to tell what he was painting until he finished. Just before the theater performance, he would turn his painting 180 degrees and then the picture was obvious. I once saw him paint on two canvasses at the same time. When finished, he turned both canvasses 90 degrees in opposite directions revealing a beautiful landscape. At intermission of the play, his painting would be auctioned to the audience. In 1975, my father took my husband and I to Black Curtain and he bought the painting and gave it to us. It is still one of my prized possessions. Shirley Slick

What part of speech is the word 'painting' in the following sentence When the weather turned cold your painting went slowly?

The word 'painting' is a noun in this sentence as only nouns or nominal groups can be preceded by determiners ("your painting") such as articles and possessives adjectives. For instance, 'the' in "The blind can hear and smell" or in "You can talk and read to the blind" has the power to transform "blind", originally an adjective, into a substantive and thus endows it with some of the characteristics that are attached to nouns. 'Your' in "your painting" plays the same role. Compare 'your painting' with 'your colours' in "When the weather turned cold, your colors went slowly."
