I don't think there was a name before Bonanza. That was always the intended name, I think.
* While the series was still running on network TV, older episodes went into syndication. It was standard practice to give syndicated reruns another title so as not to confuse viewers. The older episode of Bonanza aired under the title Ponderosa.
The main character's names were: Ben Cartwright played by Lorne Greene, Adam Cartwright played by Pernell Roberts, Hoss Cartwright played by Dan Blocker and Little Joe Cartwright play by Michael Landon.
This was the Bonanza set that was built to visit. I saw it and they would have the actors greet people at times. You saw the house that was in the TV show and the corrals.
