Established in 1862, it was one of the key players in the construction of the First Transcontinental Railroad, connecting the eastern U.S. to the Pacific coast. The Union Pacific's tracks facilitated westward expansion and played a significant role in the development of the American West.

On January 8, 1863, ground was broken in Sacramento, California, thus beginning construction on the Transcontinental Railroad. Six years later, on May 10, 1869, in Promontory Summit, Utah, the Golden Spike was driven in ceremonial completion of railroad. However, it wasn't until November 6, 1869, that the railroad was finally completed between Sacramento and Oakland, California. Further, the connection between Omaha, Nebraska, and Council Bluffs, Iowa, was not completed across a bridge until March 25, 1873; prior to that, passengers were ferried across the Missouri River.
The transcontinental railroad was built by the Union Pacific Railroad going west from Omaha, Nebraska. They built their part of the railroad to Promontory, Utah. The Central Pacific Railroad built the other part of the transcontinental railroad starting in Sacramento, California and built east meeting the Union Pacific Railroad.
