The Incas were tricked by the Conqestadors to find the sacred jewels and gold of the untouched land. Once found, they were made slaves and when there were rebellions the Conquistador's massacred the indigenous Inca population.

Eventually a series of revolutions freed South America (which should be capitalized) into republics, some of which degenerated into dictatorships.
