Nobody knows. Estimates for the population of the Inca empire at its peak range from three million (Kroeber 1939) to 39 million (Cook 1965). Neither extreme is convincing: something around 10m might be considered a plausible compromise, though no consensus exists. By 1650 fewer than two million indigenous inhabitants remained.
