The Silk Road was a very long and dangerous trading route from the far east to the Mediterranean. It should properly be called Silk Roads (plural) as there were at least three main routes. The land routs split in two around the Taklamakan desert before rejoining in Persia. It then went on to the Mediterranean cities of Tyre and Palmyra. There was also a sea route from around present day Java up through the Red sea with a short land portage to the Nile and the Mediterranean. From there they sailed or rowed right to Rome. It was important because of its length and of the contact between east and west. It was a contributing factor in the decline of Rome in a way. As Asian goods, in particular silk was imported to Rome, millions of sesterses

were sent out of the country to pay for the goods, but Rome received nothing in return except silk. This was one of the causes of Rome's financial crises and decline.
