What was the storming Bastille and why was it important?

King Louis XVI ordered troops near Versailles to dissolve the National Assembly (members of the third Estate, who took the Tennis Court Oath before and were against the privileged clergy and nobility). The Parisian people had heard this and stormed the most hated building - the imfamous prison, symbol of absolutism - and demolished it completely. They wanted to prevent the King to attack their representatives in the assembly. (14 July, 1789)

What sparked off the Storming of the Bastille was the fact that Louis XVI had dismissed his Finance Minister, Jaques Necker. Necker was sympathetic to the Third Estate, and people in Paris who supported what had happened so far (i.e. the setting up of the National Assembly) were afraid that now the king would dismiss the Assembly. Also, there were troops stationed at the palace of Versailles (just outside Paris) and people were convinced that they would be used to close the Assembly down. People were very angry and so they attacked the Bastille (a prison in Paris) which symbolised all that they hated about the power and authority of the king.

Inequalities between the Third Tstate and the other two estates, as well as hunger and poverty, led the Third Estate to attack the nobles and demand a new constitution. In this tense atmosphere, fear that the royal troops would occupy Paris led Parisians to storm the Bastille in search of weapons believed to be stored there.

Problems with food supply, caused by Royal decrees dictating what kind of food and when to plant. This flew in the face of a change in climate. Add to this the immense expense of supporting the American Revolution for which the first and second estates (the elites) the king exempted from taxes thus shifting the burden to the third estate and leading to their revolt. Starving and seeing the American Revolution as a model to follow. This unrest exploded with the news of Necker's dismissal by King Louis XVI.
