The story line of East of Eden involved the relationship Adam Trask had with his sons. It was a complex relationship and it proved to be the head start James Dean needed to become a star in Hollywood. East of Eden was a 453 page novel by John Steinbeck. Why do movies often not follow the book properly?

A movie based on a novel can be changed as example if the film would be too long. In some cases the screen writer changes the film's script to avoid or add scenes that are too graphic or not graphic enough. Some films add content as following the novel's storyline is too short. A good example of a famous film based on a novel is East of Eden. It's a long novel by John Steinbeck. The film came out in the mid 1950's and starred, among others, James Dean. The production company involved in putting the novel to the screen felt that the length of the novel would be too long, thus the movie titled East of Eden was shortened.
