The name of the dance in Back To The Future Part I is the Enchantment Under The Sea Dance - this is an extremely crucial moment in the story because Marty McFly's parents are supposed to fall in love and kiss otherwise Marty wouldn't exist in the future.
Its the Enchantment under the sea dance. So i would guess something with sea creatures and stuff like that.

In "Back to the Future," Marty McFly performs "Johnny B. Goode" at his parents' high school dance, the Enchantment Under the Sea dance. He plays it on the electric guitar, showcasing his musical talent and inadvertently influencing the timeline by encouraging his father, George McFly, to ask his mother, Lorraine, to dance. The performance is a pivotal moment in the film, blending 1950s nostalgia with Marty's modern rock style.

I think these themes could work for middle school dances: Electronic, 60s, Paradise Island, Halloween, Valentines, Christmas, Back to School
Don't forget your guests when you are looking at a theme for dance. Nice idea - but this might back fire if half your guests end up sitting it out because you've elected to have music they aren't into. You need to 'look' at your guest list .... maybe a portion of the dance you can dedicate to your favorite music, then turn it over to a mix for everyone to enjoy. You've invited these people, be good hosts.
