John Hancock's flamboyant signature on the Declaration of Independence made him an American legend. A Harvard graduate, Hancock was a prosperous Boston businessman who nonetheless favored American independence from Great Britain. He became a Massachusetts representative to the Continental Congress, and was elected president of the Continental Congress in 1775. As such, Hancock was the first to sign the Declaration of Independence in July of 1776. He wrote his name at the center of the page in extra-large script. Referring to a bounty the British had put on the heads of revolutionaries, he remarked, "The British ministry can read that name without spectacles; let them double their reward." (Hence, "John Hancock" became a slang term for any signature.) Hancock was later elected the first governor of the commonwealth of Massachusetts, serving in that position from 1780-85 and from 1787 until his death in 1793.

John Hancock, president of the Second Continental Congress, the Congress of the Confederation, and the first signer of the Declaration of Independence was born in Quincy, Massachusetts, on January 23, 1737. Hancock's mother and father, who was a clergyman, died during his youth and was adopted by his paternal uncle, Thomas Hancock. Hancock graduated from Harvard University in 1754, after graduating from Boston Latin School at the age of seventeen. Hancock decided to reside in England until 1764 and he traveled back to the United States. Shortly after his return to the United States, Hancock's uncle died. After his uncle's death, he inherited his well known and successful business, the Hancock Manor. This resulted in a huge fortune and Hancock soon became one of the wealthiest men of his time. Shortly after inheriting his uncles business, Hancock met his love, Dorothy Quincy, and they were married. John and Dorothy had two children. The first child was Lydia Hancock, who was born in October of 1776. The Hancock's only knew their daughter, Lydia, for ten months before she died. Two years later they welcomed their new son, John George Washington Hancock to their family on May twenty-first 1778. Dorothy and John only got know their son for eight years before he died on January twenty-seventh 1787. Many people, including Earnest Hemingway, believe that they are descendants of John Hancock. This is most likely untrue because of the early death of both of their children. Due to the outrageous tax increase from the British Government, Hancock began to illegally smuggle goods for his inherited business from England. In 1768, Hancock's ship, the Liberty was seized. This caused a riot in Boston, and as a result, Hancock delivered a furious speech addressing the issue. Hancock directed the boycott of tea from the British East India Company. This act resulted in the Boston Tea Party. Because of this act, the British wanted to arrest Hancock. Hancock and Samuel Adams went in to hiding together in Lexington, Massachusetts. Paul Revere rode through the town to warn that the British forces were coming. Hancock had many career accomplishments. His first major accomplishment was his success in winning the third presidency of the Second Continental Congress. One month later, Hancock ordered George Washington to lead the Revolutionary Army of the United Colonies. Only one year after his presidential election, Hancock became the first person to sign the Declaration of Independence. In 1780, Hancock was elected to be the first governor, under the new Constitution, of Massachusetts. Hancock remained governor, through re-election, until he resigned because of health reasons in 1785. After a two-year recovery period, Hancock was reelected as governor until his death. Serving his ninth term as governor of Massachusetts, Hancock met his death at the age of fifty-six, on October 8, 1793. The nation was never in a state of mourning after Hancock's death. The only main remembrance was the obvious commemoration of his signing of the Declaration of Independence. Possible reasons of why people have never recognized Hancock's contributions and sacrifices could be due to the fact that he was not the most distinguished scholar and that he was plagued with health problems throughout his lifetime.

He signed his name the biggest on the Declaration of Independence, causing a threat to the man who would be reading it because he needed glasses (the king of england) because it was saying that John wasn't afraid of him whether or not he had his glasses because he would be able to reads it. And it took a lot of courage to do that, cause he was risking his life.

What does i need your John Hancock mean?

"John Hancock" is presumably the problematic term in that phrase, the rest of it is pretty straightforward. "John Hancock" is slang for "signature", coming from the very prominent signature of John Hancock on the US Declaration of Independence. The John Hancock Life Insurance company had a commercial jingle featuring the line "put your John Hancock on the John Hancock".
