Well, there was the cotton industry.
The cotton industry was big back in the 1800's. Planters were people that owned at least 20 slaves. They would be wealth families that were called "cottonocracy". Cottonocracy is a mix between cotton and aristocracy. There were two kinds of slaves, the field slaves, and the house slaves. While house slaves were still had a lower class than that of the lowest class white man compared to the field slaves they were like royalty. Back then field slaves were expected to 12 to 16 hours a day, but for some of the slaves owners that still wasn't enough.
They are high rates of crime & it is major inhibiting factor
There were many books that were published in the 1800's. Some of the books were The Watsons, St. Irvyne, and Zastrozzi.
Law keepers from the 1800's were called Constables.

American Revolution War
After the civil war, the south did have some coal mines (mainly in Kentucky if you consider that south). But the number one Industry in southern states was tobacco. Especially in North Carolina where the American Tobacco Company was founded by James B. Duke (Founder of Duke Universtiy). The major difference between north industry and south industry was there were virtually no unions in the south.
true
The country was in need of some coal and some MONEY!!!
The Union held economic advantage over the South because they relied on industry in general, rather than just cotton. They also managed to smuggle cotton out of the South during some victories and sell it to foreign countries, taking some of the South's usually business. Industry was simply more diverse and profitable than agriculture majorly supported by cotton.
it means alot to them and not does it just mean alot to them but it also helps some of south africa's invirement depending on what kind ofpetrochemical industry you do ...... ;)
The number 1 industry in South Dakota is agriculture. Tourism is the second largest industry in South Dakota. The service sector, retail trade, and manufacturing industries account for the majority of the state's employment.
They were strong supporters of slavery, and their whole industry was based upon that. John Calhoun reprensented the south during the United States time of sectionalism (favoring the beliefs of one's area) in the Senate. During the Industrial Revolution, the south were helped by inventions like the cotton gin and interchangable parts.
Because slavery was so widely accepted in U.S. south during the 1700 & 1800's unfortunately the racism from that period still exists today. Blacks were considered property by plantation owners who depended on them as their workforce who were unpaid. Racism is pasted down from generation to generation. Unfortunately, this ignorance is not exclusive to the south...
The North relied heavily on the manufacturing industry while the South was primarily agricultural-based. The North allowed African-Americans to own property and business and be free, while in general the South maintained African-Americans were property and slaves. The North was moving towards a more open meritocracy, while the South still held to some threads of aristocracy.
