The original Little Mermaid is the first and Ariel is 16 in that movie. She is a mother of at least 28 in Little Mermaid 2. The prequel, however, conflicts on a few points with the animated series, which has been accepted by Disney as cannon. In the series, they ran into each other when she was about 6 or 7. He was being bullied and she wanted a friend so they started hanging out. In the movie, Ariel was in trouble and doing her punishment when Flounder ran away from guards because he was making music (which is now illegal). Ariel covered for him and they became friends.
