The Six Acts of 1819 prohibited civilians from training in the use of weapons; gave JPs and magistrates the right to search private houses for weapons, to seize them and their possessors; restricted all public meetings that were called to discuss 'any public grievance or any matter on Church and State' to the parish level and due notice of the time and place of the meeting had to be given to the local magistrates; set penalties for blasphemous and seditious libel and empowered magistrates to seek, seize and confiscate all libelous materials in the possession of the accused; provided the legal machinery to bring people to trial faster; and increased the taxes on printed matter, including newspapers, periodicals and pamphlets.
