Illegitimacy was strongly frowned upon during the 19th century. So much so that an illegitimate child lost all right to inheritance from their parents. The "sanctity of marriage" was held in a much higher regard than nowadays. Thus, illegitimate children were shunned and often upper-class parents would deny having the child, the mother going away for a period to have the child in secret.
