Rampant worker abuse, long hours, no safety programs, unsafe machinery, no worker's comp, the use of child labor, long hours, little pay, etc, etc. Workers were cogs in a machine, not human beings. This is the reason why we need collective bargaining in the labor force. Lincoln once said that labor was a more important piece than capital, and needed special consideration.
