What were the limitations of women in the Babylonian Empire?

Free citizen, or property, depending on whether or not they were legally sold. One of the practices of ancient Babylon, was the insurance of fertlity through sex rites at the temple of Ishtar; to fulfill her religious duty, a girl would go to the temple and wait for someone to have sex with her. The idea was that if the gods saw people going at it they would get "turned on" and bring rain. Naturally, the prettier girls always fulfilled their duties the fastest, so in ancient Babylon it was considered bad manners to not have sex with an ugly girl waiting at the temple of Ishtar.

The Jewish community there condemned that practice.
