Fredrick Douglass was a 19th century American writer, orator, statesman and a champion of American Abolitionist campaign. He was a slave himself but escaped from slavery. His biggest achievement was his intellectual accomplishment which dispelled the notion that black people were intellectually inferior. He wrote three autobiographies and all were best sellers. He also campaigned for women's suffrage.

Sophia Auld treated Fredrick as one of her own children so she began teaching him the alphabet and three to four letter words. Sophia was so proud of Fredrick that she went to her husband, Hugh, and expressed her excitement Hugh immediately scolded Sophia say that once a black man learned to read the bible, "It would forever make him unfit for the duties of a slave". Sophia stopped teaching Fredrick and became mean and short tempered with him, snatching books when Fredrick was caught reading. Fredrick didn't give up so he befriended Sophia's sons, bargaining that if he gave them food they would teach him to read. This plan was successful so later Fredrick worked on the streets for money and when he had enough he would buy books to learn from.
