This question misses the point of the narrative. David's ability to hit Goliath was not dependent on David having good aim or precision. The narrative makes clear that God is the reason for his success.
However, from a political standpoint, the confrontation between David and Goliath was a "hero battle". In the ancient period, it was believed that God or the gods decided the outcome of a massive battle, so instead of wasting all of the men and weapons on launching such a massive campaign, they would have two heroes fight for power. If the Philistines had won the "hero battle", they would likely have gained critical lands along the western ridge of the Judean Highlands, such as the area around Beersheba today.
