Probably 1967. The author was in that unit (Company A, 2/47 Infantry, 3rd brigade, 9th Inf Div) about that time frame. The film certainly didn't take place in 1969 or 1970, because the 2/47th was a Mechanized Infantry battalion during that time frame (used M113 APC/ACAV=Armored Personnel Carriers/Armored Cavalry Assault Vehicles). Which of course, were not depicted in the film. Gump's unit was, to use the term at the time, a "straight leg" grunt outfit. Straight leg meaning straight infantry, all foot soldier...no tracks (slang for armored tracked vehicles).
Most likely 1965-1966. The film is not specific on that subject.
Benjamin Bueford Blue! but people call him...........bubba.
Bubba Gump is a shrimp company that got its name from the 1994 movie Forrest Gump. In the army, Forrest meets his friend Bubba, who wants to open a shrimp company and fish for shrimp. Bubba dies in the Vietnam War, so Forrest starts the shrimp company with Lieutenant Dan instead.
His friend in the army was "Bubba" (Pvt. Benjamin Buford Blue). He also liked: Lieutenant Dan Taylor. He was fond of a girl named Jenny Curran. source: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0109830/
Vietnam war the black and white scenes during the movie on t.v are real events and footage, and they have added gump in.
The main setting for the movie "Forrest Gump" is Forrest's hometown of Greenbow, Alabama. Secondary locations for the movie are Savannah, Georgia, Vietnam, New York City and Washington, D.C. There are also scenic shots across America from when Forrest did his coast-to-coast run.

Lt. Dan wanted to serve just as a veteran. He thought it was his fate to fight and die in the was, just like all the other males in his family did. it was his mission to die for his country while in Vietnam. As for Bubba, he went to war to fight and leave. He was just there to serve because he had to. It wasn't his life dream to die in the war like Lt. Dan. He had future plans to own a shrimping boat and pursue that life dream. So in conclusion, yes Lt. Dan and Bubba relate to the war in Vietnam differently.
Bubba didn't really have a famous line. Except for his long, long list of ways to cook shrimp.
Movie is back in Gear and has a trailer for the feature length film on YOU TUBE. Type in BUBBA THE REDNECK WEREWOLF in the Search section. This was Posted: Oct 10 2014
I think it was a shrimp boat business not a restaurant that Bubba was going to establish after military service.
The Bubba Gump Shrimp Company got the idea for their name from the movie.
