"Sammy's got demon blood in him. You might have to kill him."
jeffery dean Morgan
Sam Winchester gets addicted to demon blood because the yellow-eyed demon bled into his mouth when he was six months old, on the night when the demon bled into his mouth. The reason that the demon bled into his mouth is because 10 years earlier the yellow- eyed demon killed John winchester right in front of Mary she was so upset that when he offered to bring back John for just a small price in the future she agreed. In season 4 when Dean gets back from hell sam (although deans dying wish is for him not to) has started to use his powers which are to exorcise, kill & read the minds of demons which is great because it dosent hurt the person the demon is pozzesing. The only bad point is to do this he needs to consume demon blood. Ruby the demon which saved sam & dean a lot of times has turned up while Dean was gone and had turned sam to be addicted to demon blood. It dosent end well for sam because he ends up letting lucifer the banished angel out of his cage in hell.

They don't so much find him, but he calls them. John Winchester calls Sam and Dean in season 1, episode 10 (although the actual conversation takes place in the next episode) to tell the boys to stop looking for him - then he gives them an assignment. They don't see him until they call him in episode 16 and he arrives near the end of the episode. They want to stick together and hunt down the demon that killed Mary (the boys' mother), but realize that John is not as effective as a hunter with the boys around. He worries about their safety and makes mistakes that can get him killed, so the go their separate ways again - only to reunite over the rest of the season.
