When did African Americans get their rights?

This is a very vague question as it depends what part of the world you are in, but I would have to say for the U.S.A. it may have started December 1, 1955 with Rosa Parks. But segregation (separation of blacks and whites) continued until it became a law that all must be treated equal. No matter what race or color.

It is debatable even now whether or not African Americans have achieved social or economical equality. Many police forces throughout the US suffer from institutionalized racism, and the case of George Zimmerman-Trayvon Martin shows that, among some communities, there re still deep set prejudices. Also, ust a quick look at US Prison figures shows a disproportionately high amount of African Americans in the justice system.

Obviously equality is a main goal, and a very simple answer would be equality was achieved in the 1970's with affirmative action, or by 1965 with the passing of the Voting and Civil Rights Acts.
