The last episode (#23, Season 6) saw most of the towns people gathering at Maurice's lodge for a day of unwinding and relaxing reflection. Joel's last appearance was in episode #15, in which he and Maggie go trekking out into the snowy nether lands looking for the mythical "Jeweled City" and stumbling across what we would, today - in SyFy land - refer to as a form of "portal" - Joel urges Maggie to come with him and he doesn't, and he goes through. The next scene finds Joel on a ferry in New York Harbor, smiling at the Manhattan skyline.
