Although SpongeBob premiered in 1999 and was being developed several years before that, the earliest drawing of him can be dated back to about 1986. The special features on the Spongebob season 1 DVDs provide a LOT more information, plus the actual drawing. Back when Stephen Hillenburg worked at the Ocean Institute, he created a comic called the Inter-Tidal Zone, which featured a sponge called Bob. The sponge was, however, round, and didn't look like SpongeBob, but that is technically where he got his start.
