The first motion picture (as we know it) was exhibited in 1896, and the very concept of pictures that moved drew in the crowds, so you could say that movies were popular right from the beginning.

It was in the late 17th century that theatre became popular. Theatre back in the 17th century is not like when some one goes to the theaters now. Everyone was on stage playing roles in front of live audiences.

Earliest conventional Movie- with a plot and shown in a theatre was probably (The great Train Robbery) produced by Edison studios, in l903. earlier there were shorts shown in hand and power-operated viewing devices called mutoscopes in amusement arcades. This was the origin of ( Flickers- later Flicks for movies by the British). In a sense movies evolved out a attempts to photograph, more or less for scientific reasons, moving objects , as was done with horses, boxers, and similar sports. in l895 the team of Smith and Blackton took film shorts of a steam train at l00 MPH. This was termed The Black Diamond and was s novelty shot, so to speak. These were not to be confused with films having a regular plot, such as Great Train Robbery.
