When did one piece start?

One Piece is not set in a specfic year or time, seeing as it is a made up world by Eiichiro Oda (the creator of One Piece). It would also be rather difficult to set an estimate because there are mixes of modern day (for example, fridges) and olden days (when they went to Skypiea, they were amazed that something could record sound).

Most of the clothes seem very recent too, looking at Nami in particular, who almost always wears something vaguely fashionable. But then you have others, a bit like Blackbeard, who dress in the more commonly well known pirate sort of look.

I don't think Eiichiro Oda has ever mentioned a date.

One Piece is an award-winning Japanese shōnen manga series written and illustrated by Eiichiro Oda, that has been serialized in Weekly Shōnen Jump since August 4, 1997.

The chapters have been adapted into an original video animation (OVA) produced by Production I.G in 1998.

And an anime series produced by Toei Animation, which began broadcasting in Japan in 1999. Since then, the still ongoing series has aired over 500 episodes as you can see currently.

In Montblanc Norland's journal the dates are in the 1100s and they said it was written more than 400 years ago, so my guess is 1520-1600. It could also be during the Golden Age of Piracy the 1650s to the 1720s.
