QE2's official maiden voyage departed from Southampton, England on the 2nd of May 1969 for New York. She had a 'mini maiden voyage' on 22 April in order to make sure the ship was ready, after various problems had been encountered in the previous months.
The QE2 began her maiden voyage on May 2, 1969. She broke the record for crossing the Atlantic in June 1970 with a record time of 3 days, 20 hours and 42 minutes. In November 2008, the QE2 will make her final voyage on the seas, and find a new home at the The Palm Jumeirah in Dubai, the world's largest man-made island, where she will become a floating hotel and shopping / entertainment center.
QE2 travelled further than any other ship ever has, or ever will - 6 million miles. QE2 was the fastest liner in the world - capable of 34 knots - and the most powerful twin-propellor ship in the world - 130,000hp. QE2 was built in Clydebank, Scotland and completed in 1968. QE2 entered service in April 1969 with her maiden voyage on May 2nd to New York.
QE2's keel was laid on July 2nd 1965, she was launched on September 20th 1967 and she sailed away from the shipyard on November 19th 1968 which would arguably be her date of completion. Her official maiden voyage was 2nd of May 1969.
The QE2 is now retired and permanently moored in Dubai. When it did operate.... well it's maiden voyage from Southampton to NYC in 1969 took 4 days 16 hours. That was before the engine was replaced with a diesel model in 1986. Times may have differed from then on.
