You can't sail across Africa. No water.
The first European to reach the Indian ocean was Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama
Fernao Gomes was the first major Portuguese explorer to enter Africa in 1471 around what is now Ghana. He was followed shortly by Fernao do Po and Diego Cao who both explored further east into Cameroon. Within 20 years Bartolomeo Dias and Vasco Da Gama explored further south and around the cape of Good Hope.
